What sparked your love for adventure?

The unknown.
As a kid, I always loved seeing new places, especially in nature. Old trees, meadows, ponds, lakes, and dark forests.
There’s something so captivating about being away from the sounds of cars and landscaping, and just hearing the sounds of nature all around you. Seeing what was around every corner and discovering new places has always expanded my world and how I see it.

What lessons have you gleaned from adventures have you been able to apply to your personal and professional life otherwise?

You can go further than you realize. And, you’re not as fragile as you feel.

How do you define your comfort zone, and how do you challenge it?

My comfort zone is always growing. I don’t believe any of us are truly “out” of our comfort zone when trying new things. Because many of the competencies that we use every day are still with us. So it’s never about being out of your comfort zone, it’s just that we’re simply expanding our comfort zone. And the more we try new things, the larger it gets.

... not everything that knocks you down can keep you down.
— Adam Mock

What role does nature play in your life?

Nature plays a huge role in my life. It’s easy to think our individual worlds are only as big as our morning commutes, grocery runs, offices, and homes. But getting out in nature reminds you how much is always going on outside of our lives. We’re not the center of attention. And there’s a lot of comfort in knowing that our problems are only big in relation to how small we see the world.

How do you navigate setbacks or challenges during your adventures?

As a test of my capability when it really matters. Nature is a great teacher of resilience.

I once broke my ankle on a hike. It was an extremely hot day and I was hiking to get my mind off of other stressors. When I rolled my ankle I got so angry because I was enjoying myself and I didn’t want to call for an airlift out. I took a deep breath, recentered, calmed my mind, and since I had plenty of water, I decided to hike out.
It wasn’t the wisest decision since I could have injured myself further. But it did allow me to regain a sense of control and be reminded that not everything that knocks you down can keep you down.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to start embracing adventure in their life?

Don’t wait. Make the time and get out there. You’ll realize you’re not as fragile as you feel and that your fear is not a measure of your capability.

What role does community play in your adventurous pursuits?

Everything.
As much as I love adventuring solo, adventuring with others brings a whole new level of stoke and safety. There’s nothing like being able to share adventures, stories, and laughs with others.
As they say, “Shared suffering is half the suffering. Shared happiness is twice the happiness.”

When you’re facing fear or uncertainty during your adventures, how do you cope with that?

Fear is a beautiful emotion. And we can’t have courage without it. If I feel fearful to try something new like a trail feature, jump, wall ride, or a new difficult hiking path, I acknowledge my fear and then measure it against my capability.

If I’ve done something similar and successfully in the past, I’ll proceed with caution and keep moving forward. If not, I’ll weigh the risk versus the reward and see if it’s worth it for me to try, or walk away from it and play it safe.

What aspect of your adventure experience brings you the most pride?

Building community. MTB has given me some of the greatest friendships of my life and this community has helped me to build an annual event called Ride & Shine. It’s hosted at SkyPark Bike Park in Lake Arrowhead and is focused on mental health.
It’s an opportunity to ride with your favorite content creators and crews and then in the afternoon we gather together to illuminate stories of hope from within our community around our mental health. The response from the community has been incredible and I look forward to it every year!

What motivates you to keep exploring and seeking new adventures?

Discovery. Beyond the discovery of nature, adventuring allows me to (re)discover parts of myself that were either long forgotten or never tapped into.

Advenuring continues to remind me that you’re never too old to enjoy a deep sense of wonder from the world around you.
